Beschreibung

Set in a Moldovan village during the 1960s and 70s, this poetic and sensitive novel unfolds through the eyes of a young, curious girl growing up in a Soviet republic. It is a vivid panorama of a remote community filled with eccentric characters, such as the librarian Nana Raia and the whimsical Aunt Muza, who fuel the narrator’s imagination.

While the world around her is rooted in archaic customs and the silent weight of a painful past, the girl dreams of Paris, freedom, and flowered silk dresses. The "rope" of the title symbolizes the invisible ties to family, land, and a totalitarian reality that both ground her and restrain her. Lorina Bălteanu masterfully captures the universal longing for an "elsewhere" and the desperate need to be understood.
