Kurzbeschreibung

A poetic, powerful survival saga of a family’s deportation and faith in Communist Romania.

Beschreibung

András Visky's "Die Aussiedlung" (Hungarian title: Kitelepítés, meaning "Deportation") is a sweeping, autobiographical novel that has become a major literary event in Central Europe. Published in Hungarian in 2022 and released in German translation in late 2025, it has drawn comparisons to Nobel laureates like Imre Kertész and Herta Müller.

Core Story and Background
The novel is based on Visky’s own childhood in Communist Romania. In 1958, his father, a Reformed pastor, was sentenced to 22 years of forced labor for "crimes against the socialist order." Shortly after, his wife, Júlia, and their seven children—including two-year-old András—were deported to the Bărăgan Steppe, a harsh, desolate region in eastern Romania.

The book chronicles their years in the labor camps (Răchitoasa and Lățești), where the family lived in mud huts and abandoned villages under the constant surveillance of the Securitate.
