New Voices of Montenegrin Literature – Between Tradition and Modernity

Since the 1990s, contemporary Montenegrin literature has been shaped by an ambivalent relationship with the predominantly heroic literary tradition on the one hand and Western European influences on the other. In recent years, young authors have been gaining increasing prominence on the literary scene, bringing fresh poetics, perspectives, and thematic frameworks that shed light on pressing social phenomena, questions of identity, and
postmodern literary tendencies. Whether in prose or poetry, their works open up space for experimentation, intertextuality, and intercultural dialogue.
This program aims to highlight the diversity and vitality of the Montenegrin literary scene through a conversation with the young Montenegrin writer Marija Vujošević (Podgorica, 1995). She is the author of the award-winning poetry collection Scissors Game (Igra makazama, Treći Trg, 2021), in which she critically examines patriarchy, gender roles and stereotypes, as well as the biological and cultural determinants of identity. The audience will have the opportunity to explore the trajectories of Montenegrin literature in both regional and European contexts and to learn how young Montenegrin writers connect with the literary world beyond their borders. Vujošević will read selected poems in the original and in existing translations.
