Adam Ingliz has a dream, a single goal: to become a professor of linguistics at Oxford. He leaves Sudan and crosses Europe via the “ant trail”, which takes him via Graz to the “jungle” of Calais. There, thousands wait in tents to cross the English Channel in a rubber dinghy or under a lorry. But he decides to get a hot-air balloon – to fly like the ravens, to which he is becoming increasingly drawn.
The Raven Who Loved Me is a novel about escape, the decisions we make, and love in all its facets. With humour and empathy for his characters, Abdelaziz Baraka Sakin creates a polyphonic life story of a migrant who clings unwaveringly to his dream. A man doomed to failure, whose tragedy represents that of many. And whose story, told through the narratives of his friends, seems as fantastical as E. A. Poe's raven knocking on the door late at night.
