When weapons speak, do the muses fall silent? ‘Not at all,’ is the response given in the conversations gathered here with Ukrainian artists from the fields of literature, music, theatre, film, painting, sculpture and photography. They make it clear that, especially in times of war, art is not a vain accessory, but a source of resilience and a saviour of humanity. At the same time, they convey a deeper historical understanding of the centuries-long struggle for Ukrainian identity – not least with regard to the avant-garde of the “executed rebirth” wiped out by Stalin, whose fate is tragically repeating itself today. Oscillating between courage and despair, hope and pain, the portraits created by Olha Volynska provide a polyphonic overview of vibrant Ukrainian art in the face of Russia's war of annihilation. Numerous illustrations, including colour presentations of artworks, complete the volume.
