In order to work on a major novel, a young poet took up residence in a sublet room in the winter of 1930/31. 'First write. Then live' is his resolution, but “living” demands ruthless attention. One-night stands provide only fleeting respite from the daily trials, in which sadistic fantasies play just as much a role as memories of gay affairs in a Siberian prisoner-of-war camp.
When one day in a restaurant he sees the reincarnation of his lover from the camp in a young violin student, “writing” is no longer an option and his life, which the caretaker has been watching suspiciously since he moved in, is thrown into complete disarray.
Anyone familiar with the great Austrian poet Heimito von Doderer might think that this is an episode from his life. In fact, the author, a passionate fan of Doderer, was inspired by his biography and work, but the character of the young poet here is nothing more than a literary invention.
