In her delicate yet violent poems, Louise Dupré tirelessly confronts the existential questions of humanity. At the centre is a female ‘you’, a woman of the 21st century who carries within her both the grand narrative of history and the small stories of everyday life, who is fearful and easily shaken, but who at the same time – having reached the ‘age of testaments’ – stubbornly refuses to leave only despair to posterity. She wrestles tiny joys from hopelessness; in the poem, ‘she lays carnations / on misfortune.’ Like a daily gymnastic exercise, it is important to dream of the possible instead of the unattainable.
