In this life story, which no one knows whether it is purely fictional, the narrator recalls his childhood in southern Styria, his father, who served in the Wehrmacht but hated the Nazis, the oppressive confines of a boarding school, which culminated in excessive masturbation into wallpaper, his first encounters with LSD, near encounters with the Beatles, the awakening of pop culture in Austria, and wild journeys across Europe in a 2CV. In this review of an extraordinary life without anything special, the narrator dies three times, reflects on writing and lost verses, plays ironically with footnotes and comments from editors – and finally comes to the realisation that only love lasts.
